A crisp, open sky after dark, with a proper ripple driven from the NNW and a falling glass. The water to cover at Gravel Lake is the shaded margin through bright spells. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Out in Stevens County, Minnesota, sits Gravel Lake. Everything around it is mixed forest. Surface area is around 110 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Around 1.6 miles of margin, front to back. Morris sits 15 miles from here and is the nearest stop. Ortonville lies 21 miles off, Wheaton another 22 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Records held for Stevens County cover common carp, black bullhead, northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. At Gravel Lake light and wind decide more than tackle does.
Between January at about 10°F and July at about 71°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early April. The open-water window runs from around early April to about late November in an average year. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. At Gravel Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. There is no mapped parking or launch close by, which usually means walking in. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. If the gate is shut, Clear Lake at 6.9 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Gravel Lake in what we hold.
