Rain colouring the margins today, with flat calm through the day and pressure leaking away. Activity on Dead Horse Lake should centre on inflow corners and shaded margins. If you must go, go in the night. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Itasca County, Minnesota, is where Dead Horse Lake sits. Everything around it is mixed forest. Small at around 17 acres: two anglers spread out cover most of it. On size it sits at the modest end of our Itasca County list. Some 9 miles away sits Cohasset, the nearest settlement. Further out sit Coleraine (11 miles) and Grand Rapids (11 miles). This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Records held for Itasca County cover yellow perch, largemouth bass, northern pike and bluegill. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. On Dead Horse Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
The warm month here averages 67°F; the cold one sits at 5°F. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around mid April. Going by climate averages, expect open water from about mid April until roughly late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. At Dead Horse Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. The nearest car park we can see is half a mile out, so expect a walk with your gear. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. State or provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Check whether bait restrictions apply before you buy any. Failing this one, try Lake Charlotte, 0.9 miles away. For Dead Horse Lake in particular, ask before you travel.
