An even grey lid over the water, with barely a breath of wind with the glass slipping lower. On Copper Lake, work the first drop-off and weed lines first. The evening carries the best of the day. Change depth before you change anything else. Cold hands, careful casts: precision is everything today.

Within Cook County, Minnesota, you have Copper Lake. The bank is 1,765 feet above sea level. At about 34 acres, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. Bank access stretches around 1.5 miles in total. It sits higher than most water we list in Minnesota. Start from Grand Marais, 31 miles down the road. The big place round here is Thunder Bay, 76 miles distant. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Cook County records list white sucker, yellow perch and northern pike among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Read Copper Lake before you fish it and the day goes better.
Average temperature peaks around 64°F in July and bottoms out near 4°F in January. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Ice-out usually falls in late April, and the weeks after it fish hardest. From about late April to around mid November, expect open water on the long-run figures. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. At Copper Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Overnight stays are possible about half a mile out, where camping is mapped. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Hubbub Lake, 0.7 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Copper Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
