A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a helpful ripple pushed from the SE with the glass slipping lower. Most of the action on West Lake should come off any hard bottom among the soft. Plan around the stretch from afternoon into evening. Keep moving until you find them.

West Lake is a Van Buren County water, Michigan side. The surroundings are lake country bush. With some 26 acres of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. With about 0.8 miles of edge, you can try several depths in one session. For supplies, Paw Paw is 7.8 miles out. Further out sit Mattawan (8.5 miles) and Westwood (11 miles). A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Fish documented in Van Buren County include bluegill, largemouth bass and yellow perch. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. West Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Expect July near 71°F and January near 23°F on the long-run figures. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late March. Averages place the thaw at late March and the freeze at mid December. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. Time your trip to West Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. For a change of water, North Lake is 1.1 miles distant. Check the position on West Lake before loading the car.
