An even grey lid over the water, with air barely moving and the barometer holding steady. Give the weed line and any gaps in it the first hour at Mud Lake. One clear peak today: the evening. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Mud Lake belongs to Mecosta County, Michigan. The country here is mixed forest. At 11 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. Head to Big Rapids, 5.2 miles away, for anything you forgot. The big place round here is Grand Rapids, 52 miles distant. A county line runs close by, so local bylaws can differ within a short drive.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Mecosta County records list bluegill, largemouth bass, rock bass, black crappie and northern pike among the fish reported. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Anyone new to Mud Lake should walk it once before setting up.
Climate records put July near 68°F and January near 19°F. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early April. Averages place the thaw at early April and the freeze at mid December. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Mud Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Should this one be busy, Turnbull Lake is 0.9 miles off. For Mud Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
