Dull, settled light over the water, with calm air over the water and pressure going nowhere. Mud Lake should fish best around the seam between weed and open water today. The night carries the best of the day. Make the first hour count and build on it. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Mud Lake falls in Barry County, part of Michigan. The setting is lake country bush on every side. It covers about 23 acres, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Around 1.2 miles of margin, front to back. Hastings sits 7.3 miles from the bank. Stony Point follows at 8.8 miles, then Nashville at 9.8 miles. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
We hold no depth figure for this one. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. County-wide records name bluegill, largemouth bass and yellow perch. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Mud Lake repays a walk before the first cast.
Average temperature peaks around 71°F in July and bottoms out near 22°F in January. The year splits cleanly: hard water, then open water. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near late March. Break-up sits around late March on average, with the water closing again about mid December. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Expect Mud Lake to follow that timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Sort the permit out before you load the car. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, Pierce Lake at 1.4 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Mud Lake in what we hold.
