Dull, settled light over the water, with a firm SSW blow as pressure slides. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Lake Sapphire. The morning is where the day comes good. Ride the conditions while they last. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Set in Missaukee County, Michigan, this is Lake Sapphire. Beyond the shoreline you have pine and birch. Surface area is around 246 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Some 3.9 miles of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. It is among the larger waters listed here for Missaukee County. Cadillac sits 7.9 miles from here and is the nearest stop. The big place round here is Grand Rapids, 96 miles distant. Local rules may differ a few miles either side of here.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Records held for Missaukee County cover white sucker, johnny darter, brook trout and bluegill. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Lake Sapphire the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Between January at about 18°F and July at about 67°F, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter closes the water for a while, and the reopening is worth catching. Break-up comes around mid April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Ice usually gives way near mid April, and forms again about early December. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Lake Sapphire runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Public data does not answer the access question here. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. A slipway is marked about half a mile from here. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Crooked Lake sits 1.6 miles off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Lake Sapphire in what we hold.
