A grey, even sky over the water, with a faint SW drift and pressure on the rise. Most of the action on Caroga Lake should come off shallow cover and weed edges. Block out the hours from night into morning. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Caroga Lake lies within the bounds of Livingston County, Michigan. Mixed forest runs right down to the water. This is a pocket water of some 18 acres, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. On size it sits at the modest end of our Livingston County list. For a base, Brighton sits 4.4 miles out. Beyond it, Pinckney at 5.5 miles and Whitmore Lake at 6.6 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Livingston County include bluegill, largemouth bass, black crappie, pink salmon and yellow perch. County records show what lives in the area; the local agency holds the water-by-water list. Caroga Lake gives up more to patience than to distance.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 71°F, while January sits near 22°F. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near late March. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late March and starts locking again about mid December. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Caroga Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing on record says whether the bank is open or closed. Public data records a boat ramp half a mile out. You can park half a mile away and walk in from there. Mapping shows a jetty some half a mile off. There is a campsite half a mile from the water. Toilets show in mapping about half a mile away. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Nothing here settles the position at Caroga Lake for certain.
