Bright moon and an empty sky tonight, with calm air over the water and pressure going nowhere. Fish at Heywood Reservoir should hold close to the backs of creeks if water is moving in. The day fishes best from morning through afternoon. Fish confidently and change only when the bites stop.

Heywood Reservoir is one of the Worcester County waters in Massachusetts. The water sits 646 feet up. Surface area is around 37 acres, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Shoreline comes to about 1.2 miles, small enough to learn in a day. Leominster at 3 miles is the nearest place to stop. For a city, Worcester is 16 miles off. Rules here are straightforward: one county, one set of rules.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Records held for Worcester County cover bluegill, chain pickerel, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed and yellow bullhead. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Heywood Reservoir gives up more to patience than to distance.
The year swings from about 22°F in January to roughly 69°F in July. The freeze arrives properly here and holds. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around early April. Averages place the thaw at early April and the freeze at late December. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. On Heywood Reservoir the same rules apply, with local timing.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. You will be walking about half a mile from the nearest car park. Wekepeke Wildlife Conservation Easement covers ground next to the water; its rules will apply on that side. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. For a change of water, Fall Brook Reservoir is 0.7 miles distant. Signs at Heywood Reservoir carry more weight than any list.
