Stars out and no cloud tonight, with a kind NNW breeze on the water with a settled glass. The fish at Nodaway Lake are likely to sit near the first drop-off and weed lines. Block out the hours from morning through afternoon. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Set in Adair County, Iowa, this is Nodaway Lake. This is pine and birch country. It measures about 26 acres, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Bank access stretches around 0.9 miles in total. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Adair County. The nearest place of any size is Greenfield, 2.1 miles away. Creston follows at 17 miles, then Stuart at 17 miles. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Standing timber shows when the level drops, and fish sit against it. Open biodiversity records for Adair County list bluegill, channel catfish, largemouth bass, black crappie and brown trout. County records show the wider picture rather than this one place. On Nodaway Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Expect July near 75°F and January near 20°F on the long-run figures. Winter shuts things down for a spell, then spring reopens them fast. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late March. Average temperatures cross freezing around late March in spring and again near mid December in autumn. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. That is the shape of the year on Nodaway Lake.
The rules here are undocumented as far as public sources go. Ken Sidey Nature Area covers this ground, which means extra rules to check. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Greenfield Lake is 1 mile distant. Signs at Nodaway Lake carry more weight than any list.
