A clean, cloudless night over the water, with the surface near flat and a rising glass. Activity on Iowa Lake should centre on the first drop-off and weed lines. The best of it runs night into morning. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Iowa Lake is a Martin County water, in Minnesota. The water sits 1,194 feet up. At 665 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. Shoreline length is close to 8.0 miles, and each section fishes a little differently. Few waters listed in Martin County are bigger. Fairmont at 11 miles is the nearest place to stop. After that come Sherburn at 17 miles and Estherville at 20 miles. The county line runs close by, so rules can change within a short drive.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. County-wide records name common carp, yellow perch, black bullhead, black crappie and walleye. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Iowa Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Averages here run 72°F at the top of summer and 14°F at the bottom of winter. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Winter locks it down, and early April brings it back. In an average year the thaw lands around early April and the freeze near early December. Late spring and early autumn carry the year between them. Expect Iowa Lake to follow that timing.
No access rule appears in what we hold. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. You can camp about half a mile away, going by the mapping. For walleye, a jig and minnow near the bottom is the standard; evenings beat middays. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. South Silver Lake, 1.5 miles away, makes the obvious fallback. Nothing on Iowa Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
