Heavy overcast holding through the day, with a gentle ripple from the ENE with a softening glass. Whatever swims in Vulcan Lakes should be near inflow corners and shaded margins. Make the evening the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

The McHenry County entry here is Vulcan Lakes, in Illinois. It sits at 860 feet above sea level. At 276 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. Bank access stretches around 3.1 miles in total. Few waters listed in McHenry County are bigger. Crystal Lake lies 1.8 miles from the water. After that come Lakewood at 2.7 miles and Lake in the Hills at 2.7 miles. You are close to a county edge here; who manages the access can change within a short drive.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Draw-down through summer strips the margins, so follow the water out. The old creek line under the surface is the feature worth finding. Fish documented in McHenry County include bluegill, largemouth bass, green sunfish, pumpkinseed and channel catfish. Records at this level tell you what is in the area. On Vulcan Lakes the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
Typical July readings run about 73°F; by January the average is down near 20°F. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Winter locks it down, and late March brings it back. Average temperatures cross freezing around late March in spring and again near mid December in autumn. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Vulcan Lakes runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Our records carry no access rule either way. A launch point is recorded some half a mile off. Boat moorings show in mapping some half a mile from here. You can leave the car about half a mile from the water. There is a mapped landing stage half a mile away. Picnic facilities are recorded some half a mile out. Mapping records toilets within half a mile. A phone call first saves an afternoon. North Lake at 0.4 miles is the sensible second choice. None of that is settled for Vulcan Lakes in what we hold.
