A grey, even sky over the water, with a helpful ripple pushed from the ENE and pressure ticking upward. The fish at Lake of the Coves are likely to sit near the seam between weed and open water. The evening carries the best of the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lake of the Coves sits in Cook County, out in Illinois. The surface lies 850 feet up. Compared with other Illinois water on our list, it sits high. For supplies, South Barrington is 2.1 miles out. Inverness lies 4.1 miles off, Streamwood another 4.1 miles. Other water within reach: Crabtree Lake within 2.1 miles, Penny Road Pond at 2.6 miles, Bode Lakes within 2.9 miles, Keene Lake at 3.5 miles and Beverly Lake within 3.5 miles. The boundary is close enough to be worth checking before you fish.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. Inflow corners move water, and moving water gathers fish. Rip-rap along the wall holds fish that the open bank never does. County-wide records name common carp, bluegill, green sunfish, gizzard shad and goldfish. County data is a starting point rather than a guarantee. On Lake of the Coves the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Expect July near 73°F and January near 21°F on the long-run figures. Cold locks it up for a good stretch each year. Count the season from break-up, usually late March. Climate figures give an open season running late March to mid December. The strong weeks are the first after break-up and the last before the freeze. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lake of the Coves.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. A carry of half a mile from the nearest parking is the price of fishing here. Stillman Nature Center covers ground next to the water; its rules will apply on that side. Carp respond to sweetcorn or boilies fished patiently on the bottom near feeding areas. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Crabtree Lake, 2.1 miles away, makes the obvious fallback.
