Patchy cloud over the water after dark, with a consistent blow out of the NE and pressure sitting still. Give the margins and the shelf beyond them the first hour at Lake Van. The useful hours run the day. Trust the forecast and stay out through the window. The autumn feed-up is on; baitfish areas are the key.

Florida holds Lake Van, in Polk County. It sits at 131 feet above sea level. At some 616 acres it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. With 4.2 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. On our Polk County list it sits near the top for size. For a base, Lake Alfred sits 2.9 miles out. Lakeland sits 12 miles out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Public wildlife records from this area list largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, threadfin shad and blue tilapia. The records cover the area rather than this water alone. At Lake Van the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Typical July readings run about 82°F; by January the average is down near 60°F. The season is continuous, with heat as the only real check. Spring and autumn carry the fishing; summer squeezes it into the edges of the day. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lake Van.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A launch point is recorded some half a mile off. The closest car park is half a mile away, so pack accordingly. A pier or jetty stands half a mile away, which helps on a crowded bank. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, Lake Medora at 1.1 miles is the nearest alternative. Signs at Lake Van carry more weight than any list.
