A clear night sky over the water, with a busy ENE wind on the open water with the glass holding level. Give bays that hold the day's warmth the first hour at Adair Lake. Make the night the heart of the trip. Make the first hour count and build on it. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Out in Mariposa County, California, sits Adair Lake. It sits at 9,754 feet above sea level. At 7 acres it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. Nearest town is Yosemite Valley, 10 miles off. Beyond it, Mammoth Lakes at 24 miles and Oakhurst at 28 miles. Water in the same corner: Obelisk Lake at 1.5 miles, Grayling Lake just 2.7 miles, Ottoway Lakes at 2.8 miles, Upper Ottoway Lake just 2.9 miles and Washburn Lake at 2.9 miles. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. County-wide records name rainbow trout, brook trout, brown trout, Sacramento sucker and black crappie. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. On Adair Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The warmest month averages 55°F, the coldest about 24°F. Seasons are distinct, and each one fishes differently. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid May. Averages suggest open water from about mid May through to roughly late November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. It sets the rhythm of the year at Adair Lake.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. For the bass here, soft plastics worked slow along cover and a spinnerbait for searching do most of the work. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Obelisk Lake sits 1.5 miles off and takes the overflow. Rules at Adair Lake are worth checking on the day.
