Rain colouring the margins today, with a faint SSE drift with a settled glass. Most of the action on Lake Dorothy should come off the seam between weed and open water. The morning carries the best of the day. Ride the conditions while they last. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lake Dorothy lies in Juneau City and Borough, Alaska. The bank is 2,431 feet above sea level. The water covers around 990 acres, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. With 9.3 miles or so of shoreline, boat anglers cover ground the bank cannot. It sits higher than most water we list in Alaska. The town to know is Juneau, 17 miles out. It is 590 miles to Anchorage, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Juneau City and Borough records list Chum salmon, sockeye salmon and Coho salmon among the fish reported. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Lake Dorothy responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect August to average close to 47°F, with January the cold end at about 19°F. Fishing here follows the temperature more than the calendar. Expect a solid lid for months and a thaw around mid May. Ice clears near mid May and comes back about early November in a typical year. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Lake Dorothy runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Bank access can be seasonal on ground like this. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. Failing this one, try Bart Lake, 1.7 miles away. Signs at Lake Dorothy carry more weight than any list.
