Wet weather working through today, with stillness over the whole water and steady pressure. Give the weed line and any gaps in it the first hour at Loch Sloy. The best of it runs morning through afternoon. Push the good hours hard and rest through the dead ones. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Out in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, sits Loch Sloy. It sits in farm and woodlot. At 295 acres this is proper open water rather than a pond. The outline measures near 4.1 miles, so local knowledge counts. It is among the larger waters listed here for Argyll and Bute. Garelochhead is the closest town at 13 miles. Beyond it, Rhu at 17 miles and Rosneath at 18 miles. Two sets of local rules meet not far from this water.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Across Argyll and Bute, recorded fish include brown trout, European eel and Atlantic salmon. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Anyone new to Loch Sloy should walk it once before setting up.
The range across the year is 2°C to 12°C. Conditions shift steadily rather than sharply. In a normal year the cover is thin and short-lived. March through May is the strongest run, with October and November a second stretch. That is the shape of the year on Loch Sloy. A settled spell fishes better than a bright one.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It is an impounded water, so levels are managed and can shift through the year. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. If the gate is shut, Lochan Srath Dubh-uisge at 2.5 miles is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Loch Sloy in what we hold.
