Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. County-wide records name brown trout, chub, Atlantic salmon and dace. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Top Pool responds to conditions more than to tactics.

• Tackle & Baits

There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Expect a half a mile walk in from where the car goes. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. A landowner's word beats anything printed elsewhere. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. For a change of water, Betton Pool is 0.7 miles distant.
