A white sky and falling snow today, with light air out of the SE and the barometer holding steady. Whatever swims in Sockeye Lake should be near the first drop-off and weed lines. A tough forecast; the middle of the day offers the only real chance. Keep baits small and presentations quiet.

Set in Haines Junction, Sockeye Lake is a Yukon water. The ground around here is taiga. Surface area runs to roughly 1.76 sq km, so plan for one area rather than the whole. Some 7.3 km of bank gives room to move when the wind turns. Whitehorse at 142 km is the nearest place to stop. Further out sit Skagway (174 km) and Haines (186 km). No border sits close enough to matter.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. County-wide records name Arctic grayling, northern pike, lake trout and Dolly Varden. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. On Sockeye Lake that means starting tight and working out.
The seasonal spread runs -17°C to 9°C. The ice season is long here and the open one short. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late May. Break-up sits around late May on average, with the water closing again about mid October. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Sockeye Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Johobo Lake, 2.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Sockeye Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
