Snow in the air today, with a light chop building from the SE and no real change in pressure. The fish at Rainbow Lake are likely to sit near the weed line and any gaps in it. The forecast is against you; the evening is the least bad option. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Bundle up; the fishing will be slow but not impossible.

Look for Rainbow Lake in the Haines Junction part of Yukon. The land about it is spruce and muskeg. This is sizeable water at about 1.42 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. At about 6.5 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Whitehorse sits 120 km from the bank. After that come Skagway at 170 km and Haines at 186 km. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Reported across Haines Junction: Arctic grayling, northern pike, lake trout, Dolly Varden and round whitefish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. Take Rainbow Lake a stretch at a time.
Long-term averages put July at about 12°C and January near -18°C. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from early May. Break-up sits around early May on average, with the water closing again about early November. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. It holds true on Rainbow Lake more years than not.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Lower Kathleen Lake, 4.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Signs at Rainbow Lake carry more weight than any list.
