A clean, cloudless night over the water, with a whisper of wind from the SSW and the barometer holding steady. Give reed fringes and open pockets the first hour at Walter Lake. A broad window opens from night into morning. Commit to the pattern once the first fish shows. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Look for Walter Lake in the Green Lake part of Saskatchewan. The setting is boreal forest on every side. Around 54 hectares of surface means several distinct areas to work. About 4.5 km of bank, so nothing stays unexplored for long. Our Green Lake list holds plenty of bigger water. Some 48 km away sits Meadow Lake, the nearest settlement. Beyond it, Cold Lake at 155 km and Shellbrook at 156 km. This one is safely inside the county line.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Green Lake records list lake whitefish, northern pike, longnose sucker, walleye and white sucker among the fish reported. Species recorded across the county may be limited to a few waters. Walter Lake gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Between January at about -19°C and July at about 17°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Winter owns most of the year at this latitude. Ice is part of the season here, ending near late April. Ice usually gives way near late April, and forms again about early November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. Walter Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. If the gate is shut, Ross Lake at 1.1 km is the nearest alternative. Nothing on Walter Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
