Moonlight in and out behind the cloud tonight, with steady pressure of wind from the SSE and pressure sitting still. On Round Lake, work the first drop-off and weed lines first. A grinding day likely, with the evening worth the effort if any is. Scale down and fish slowly. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Round Lake is one of the Kelvington No. 366 listings for Saskatchewan. The land about it is taiga. This is sizeable water at about 4.73 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. The margin runs to about 8.5 km in total. The nearest place of any size is Wadena, 54 km away. Further out sit Preeceville (68 km) and Tisdale (69 km). The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Species logged across Kelvington No. 366 include Iowa darter, johnny darter, common shiner, emerald shiner and fathead minnow. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. At Round Lake the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 17°C, while January sits near -19°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Break-up comes around late April, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate averages put the opening at about late April and the closing near early November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. That is the shape of the year on Round Lake.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. A slipway 870 m out gives trailer access. The water borders Round Lake Recreation Site, so reserve rules are likely to apply. Provincial rules still apply whatever the bank status. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. For a change of water, Englund Lake is 6 km distant. The position on Round Lake is worth confirming on the day.
