Overcast skies today, with a persistent wind from the SE and pressure sitting still. Most of the action on Nipekamew Lake should come off the shaded margin through bright spells. The forecast is against you; the morning is the least bad option. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

In Saskatchewan, Nipekamew Lake belongs to Timber Bay. What surrounds it is boreal forest. At roughly 14.05 sq km it ranks among the larger waters in the region. Start from La Ronge, 80 km down the road. Further out sit Nipawin (131 km) and Prince Albert (143 km). In the same area: East Trout Lake out at 8.4 km, Hopkins Lake just 11 km, Salmond Lake out at 13 km, Shallow Lake just 14 km and Clarence Lake out at 19 km. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Records held for Timber Bay cover northern pike, yellow perch, white sucker, walleye and brook trout. Read it as a county summary, not a water-by-water list. Fish Nipekamew Lake to its features, not to its size.
July runs about 16°C on average, January about -21°C. This far north the hard season runs and runs. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about early November. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Nipekamew Lake runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping shows an empty shoreline: no ramp, no jetty, no marked entry. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Look for a notice board at the entrance. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. If the gate is shut, East Trout Lake at 8.4 km is the nearest alternative. What applies at Nipekamew Lake may have changed since it was mapped.
