Drifting cloud with clear gaps tonight, with hardly a ripple anywhere and pressure going nowhere. Start the search at Harper Lake along the shallows early and the drop later. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Look for Harper Lake in Torch River No. 488, Saskatchewan. It sits at 493 metres above sea level. Roughly 4.19 sq km of surface: treat each bay as a water in its own right. At about 10 km of edge, most people work one arm at a time. Nipawin sits 65 km from here and is the nearest stop. Prince Albert lies 71 km off, Melfort another 82 km. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
We hold no depth figure for this one. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Torch River No. 488 records list brook trout, northern pike, lake trout, johnny darter and longnose dace among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. On Harper Lake the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Climate normals give 17°C for July and -20°C for January. The season is measured in weeks rather than months. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly early November. The open run goes from the thaw to the freeze, and April through October covers most of it. At Harper Lake the season follows that pattern closely.
The paperwork position is blank for this one. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Access can change hands, so last year's answer may not hold. Jacquine Lake, 12 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Rules at Harper Lake are worth checking on the day.
