A sharp, clear morning turning into a bright day, with a kind N breeze on the water and pressure going nowhere. Give structure within a cast of the bank the first hour at Echo Lake. The forecast backs the stretch from afternoon into evening. Ride the conditions while they last. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Echo Lake falls in B-Say-Tah, part of Saskatchewan. It stands 474 metres above sea level. At roughly 12.83 sq km it ranks among the larger waters in the region. Fort Qu'Appelle lies 5.1 km from the water. It is 67 km to Regina, the nearest city. Also on the doorstep: Jumping Deer Creek at about 3.6 km and Katepwa Lake roughly 16 km. It sits near the edge of the county, so check which rules apply.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Fish documented in B-Say-Tah include white sucker, yellow perch, cisco, Iowa darter and johnny darter. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Treat Echo Lake as a water to read rather than to cover.
Average temperature peaks around 18°C in July and bottoms out near -17°C in January. Winter shuts the surface down for months. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough late April. Averages place the thaw at late April and the freeze at mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Anyone fishing Echo Lake regularly works to that calendar.
Nothing in our records says who may fish here. There is no recorded infrastructure here; expect to find your own way in. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Jumping Deer Creek at 3.6 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Echo Lake before loading the car.
