No direct sun expected today, with a working ESE breeze with the glass holding level. Most of the action on Drope Lake should come off the calm side of the wind. A tough forecast; the morning offers the only real chance. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. The cold will pin fish to deeper, stable water.

Set in Air Ronge, Drope Lake is a Saskatchewan water. Land around it is boreal forest. La Ronge lies 64 km from the water. The nearest city of size is Saskatoon, 394 km away. Other water within reach: Mountain Lake some 5.9 km off, Iskwatikan Lake at about 8.5 km, Nistowiak Lake some 8.6 km off, Bagshaw Lakes at about 12 km and Switzer Lake some 13 km off. The nearest edge is a long way off, so local rules apply throughout.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Across Air Ronge, recorded fish include lake trout, northern pike, white sucker, walleye and cisco. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. On Drope Lake the first feature you find is usually worth a session.
Average temperature peaks around 17°C in July and bottoms out near -21°C in January. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. Average temperatures cross freezing around early May in spring and again near early November in autumn. Early summer and early autumn carry the open-water season. Drope Lake runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Some water is controlled locally without a sign saying so. Mountain Lake, 5.9 km away, makes the obvious fallback. For Drope Lake, the notice at the access point is the final word.
