A grey, even sky over the water, with air barely moving with the barometer flat. The productive water at Cook Lake will be around reed fringes and open pockets. A slow day overall; the morning is the best of a quiet lot. Go lighter and slower than usual. A cold snap day, so work the warmest water you can find.

Cook Lake is set in Sandy Bay, Saskatchewan. It sits in spruce and muskeg country. At some 1.84 sq km it is far too large to cover on foot in a day. Shoreline length is close to 11 km, and each section fishes a little differently. Our Sandy Bay list holds plenty of bigger water. Pelican Narrows sits 263 km from the bank. It is 633 km to Saskatoon, the nearest city. No border sits close enough to matter.
Depth went unrecorded, which puts the reading back on you. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Open biodiversity records for Sandy Bay list northern pike, walleye and yellow perch. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The near bank of Cook Lake is often the one people ignore.
Climate records put July near 15°C and January near -24°C. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near mid May. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near late October in autumn. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Cook Lake.
Whether you may fish here is not something records settle. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. No car park, ramp or path is recorded within easy reach of the shore. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Dunnett Lake, 7.5 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Cook Lake in what we hold.
