A closed sky with even light today, with a whisper of wind from the ESE and pressure sitting still. Give sheltered bays and points the first hour at Cook Lake. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the morning. Fish the best hour hard and keep the rest short. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Hudson Bay No. 394, Cook Lake is a Saskatchewan water. The ground around here is mixed forest. About 1.61 sq km, so local knowledge or a boat saves a lot of walking. The edge covers about 8.0 km, enough to hold several distinct areas. The nearest place of any size is Nipawin, 91 km away. Saskatoon sits 316 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Hudson Bay No. 394 records list goldeye, northern pike, white sucker and johnny darter among the fish reported. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Fish Cook Lake to its features, not to its size.
Long-term averages put July at about 18°C and January near -21°C. Cold winters and warm summers give a wide working range. Look for the thaw near late April; the fishing lifts straight after. Averages suggest open water from about late April through to roughly early November. Spring is short and heavy here; autumn is longer and steadier. On Cook Lake the same rules apply, with local timing.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. Should this one be busy, Dumbell Lake is 18 km off. Treat access at Cook Lake as something to verify.
