A closed sky with even light today, with a decent ESE wind working the banks and steady pressure. Start the search at Cole Lake along the weed line and any gaps in it. A stay-home graph, with the night as the one excuse to go. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Bundle up; the fishing will be slow but not impossible.

Cole Lake lies within the bounds of Stony Rapids, Saskatchewan. Spruce and muskeg runs right down to the water. The water covers some 65 hectares, so pick a bank rather than trying to cover it all. There is roughly 5.4 km of bank, more than one visit can cover properly. On size it sits at the modest end of our Stony Rapids list. The town to know is Fort Smith, 315 km out. The nearest city of size is Edmonton, 768 km away. It sits well inside the county, so one set of rules covers it.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Public occurrence data for Stony Rapids names cisco, northern pike, round whitefish and lake chub. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. Cole Lake responds to conditions more than to tactics.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -27°C on the long-run figures. The year here is short and sharp: a long lid, then a burst of open water. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly mid May. Average temperatures cross freezing around mid May in spring and again near late October in autumn. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Expect Cole Lake to follow that timing.
Who may fish here is not settled in anything we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Some ground is open by custom rather than by right, so tread carefully. Johnson Bay, 13 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Cole Lake as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
