Dull, settled light over the water, with barely a breath of wind with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Axis Lake should be near inflow corners and shaded margins. A slow day overall; the night is the best of a quiet lot. Scale down and fish slowly. A properly cold day, so expect slow, deliberate fishing.

Axis Lake falls in Stony Rapids, part of Saskatchewan. The setting is spruce and muskeg. This is sizeable water at about 6.76 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. The shoreline runs to about 45 km, far more than one trip can cover. Nearest place of any size is Fort Smith, 338 km away. It is 791 km to Edmonton, the nearest city. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Records held for Stony Rapids cover cisco, northern pike, round whitefish and lake chub. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Work Axis Lake in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Between January at about -27°C and July at about 16°C, the water has a wide range to work through. Ice holds for a long stretch, so the open weeks matter more here than further south. Look for the thaw near mid May; the fishing lifts straight after. Averages place the thaw at mid May and the freeze at late October. The strongest runs come at either end of the open season. Time your trip to Axis Lake by conditions rather than dates.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. No made access appears within a short radius, so plan to park on a verge and walk. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. The nearest alternative is Currie Lake, 6 km out. Nothing on Axis Lake should be assumed from this page alone.
