An even grey lid over the water, with a consistent blow out of the WSW and no real change in pressure. Fish at Mud Pond should hold close to any feature that breaks the open water. The day holds up well from the day. Work the productive water thoroughly. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Chaudière-Appalaches, Quebec, this is Mud Pond. The water sits 346 metres up. It covers about 5 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine at 8.7 km is the nearest place to stop. Sherbrooke is the closest city, 67 km away. A border sits close enough to be relevant to the paperwork.
No depth figure appears in our records, so the bank has to tell you. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Chaudière-Appalaches, recorded fish include lake sturgeon, Atlantic sturgeon and longnose sucker. Several of these carry legal protection or closed seasons; the rulebook comes before the rod. Mud Pond gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
The year swings from about -12°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. Winter shuts the surface down for months. After late April the shallows warm and the fish move up. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Mud Pond runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Réserve naturelle du Lac-Breeches takes in this water; protected-area rules will apply. Walleye come to jigs worked slow near bottom, and to trolled crankbaits along the drops at dusk. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. The nearest alternative is Petit lac Long, 0.8 km out. Rules at Mud Pond are worth checking on the day.
