A wet system passing over today, with flat calm through the day with the glass holding level. Lac Vernet should fish best around any hard bottom among the soft today. The night is where the day comes good. Fish tidy and take what the day gives. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Lac Vernet lies in Nord-du-Québec, in Quebec. It stands 404 metres above sea level. At about 14 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. The full circuit measures close to 2.1 km on foot. On size it sits at the modest end of our Nord-du-Québec list. The nearest place of any size is Chibougamau, 36 km away. Saguenay sits 260 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
Depth is not on record here, which means reading the ground instead. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. Survey and observation records for Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish. What holds for the county may not hold for this water. Work Lac Vernet in sections rather than trying to cover it.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -19°C in January. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. The lid usually sets by midwinter and gives way around early May. Ice clears near early May and comes back about mid November in a typical year. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Lac Vernet runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Nothing is mapped in the way of a ramp or car park within a short radius. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Some banks are open only from a marked point. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Lac des Anopheles, 1.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. None of that is settled for Lac Vernet in what we hold.
