Flat light and a covered sky today, with a whisper of wind from the S with a settled glass. Activity on Lac Vermont should centre on the shallows early and the drop later. Not a day the forecast likes; the night keeps a flicker of interest. Lower the pace and stay patient. The pre-winter feed makes autumn days generous.

Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec, is where Lac Vermont sits. The surroundings are spruce and muskeg. This is sizeable water at about 8.28 sq km, and a boat opens up most of it. The shoreline runs to about 35 km, far more than one trip can cover. It ranks high for size among our Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean listings. Labrecque sits 42 km from here and is the nearest stop. Further out sit Saint-Ambroise (45 km) and Saint-Honoré (46 km). It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. County-wide records name northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. The shape of Lac Vermont decides where the fish sit.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -18°C on the long-run figures. Water stays cold even at the height of the year. Look for the thaw near early May; the fishing lifts straight after. On average, early May opens the water and mid November closes it again. May into June fishes hardest, and September gives a second good stretch before the lid returns. Expect Lac Vermont to follow that timing.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Parking space is the usual limit rather than the bank itself. Rules for boats are stricter than rules for the bank in many places. Failing this one, try Lac Surprenant, 2 km away. Rules at Lac Vermont are worth checking on the day.
