Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with a kind SSE breeze on the water and no real change in pressure. Give sheltered bays and points the first hour at Lac Travers. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Lac Travers belongs to Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. The country round it is spruce and muskeg from end to end. At 5 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. Labrecque lies 27 km from the water. Then Saint-Ambroise, 27 km, and Saint-Honoré, 30 km. Close neighbours run: Lac Marie within 0.3 km, Lac des Iles at 1.3 km, Lac Jacques within 1.4 km, Lac Ascension at 2.1 km and Lac Malfait within 2.3 km. Rules here are straightforward: one set of provincial rules.
No chart reached our records; the first cast is your sounding. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Open biodiversity records for Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean list northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. At least one recorded species is protected in parts of its range; read the local rules before targeting anything. At Lac Travers the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Temperature averages peak at 16°C in July and bottom out at -18°C in January. The fishing year opens late and shuts early. The lid usually goes in early May, which opens the strongest weeks of the year. The season between ice runs from about early May to mid November. Reckon on open water from spring through to late autumn, with May and June the strongest. Lac Travers runs to its own calendar within the local pattern.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. A wire trace and a big bright lure handle the pike; deep water asks for a heavier spoon. Ask in the nearest town if you are unsure. Signs go up and come down, so check on the day. Lac Marie, 0.3 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Treat Lac Travers as unsettled until someone local tells you otherwise.
