Steady rain over the water today, with air barely moving and steady pressure. The water to cover at Lac Topaze is the margins and the shelf beyond them. The numbers single out the night. Cover water early, then settle where the signs are. Autumn rewards covering water while the fish roam.

Look for Lac Topaze in the Mauricie part of Quebec. Elevation runs to 524 metres. At about 24 hectares, a day is enough to walk the shoreline properly. With about 3.7 km of edge, you can try several depths in one session. It sits higher than most water we list in Quebec. Supplies mean a trip to Weymontachie, 56 km off. For a city, Saguenay is 160 km off. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Reported across Mauricie: northern pike, brook trout, walleye and yellow perch. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. On Lac Topaze the quiet end is the one worth the extra effort.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -18°C. Little of the calendar is open water, so timing counts for everything. The freeze runs deep into the year, with break-up near early May. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. It sets the rhythm of the year at Lac Topaze.
The access position is unclear from public sources. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Should this one be busy, Lac Suzanne is 0.7 km off. Ask locally about Lac Topaze if anything is unclear.
