Dull, settled light over the water, with a whisper of wind from the S and steady pressure. The fish at Lac Thoinette are likely to sit near structure within a cast of the bank. The numbers single out the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooling water has fish active and on the move.

Nord-du-Québec in Quebec is where Lac Thoinette sits. It lies 415 metres above sea level. With some 11 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The bank runs about 1.6 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Our Nord-du-Québec list holds plenty of bigger water. Some 66 km away sits Chibougamau, the nearest settlement. Chapais lies 81 km off, Mistissini another 112 km. The county line is nowhere near, so one local authority covers the water.
No figure exists for depth, so let the water show you. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Nord-du-Québec records list Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco among the fish reported. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. Read Lac Thoinette for ten minutes before the first cast goes out.
Long-term averages put July at about 16°C and January near -19°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Hard water holds through the cold months, breaking up near early May. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. Lac Thoinette runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
We hold no note on access for this one. It formed naturally, so levels move with rainfall rather than with a gate. Mapping records no facilities at all near this water. For the trout, small spinners and a box of nymphs cover both approaches. Check locally before you travel, because a wasted drive is a long one. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. If the gate is shut, Lac Mouy at 1.3 km is the nearest alternative. None of that is settled for Lac Thoinette in what we hold.
