Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with air barely moving and pressure sitting still. The water to cover at Lac Sonate is windblown banks where food collects. Little to get excited about, though the middle of the day holds a sliver of promise. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Lac Sonate lies in Outaouais, Quebec. The setting is mixed forest. The whole thing is a single swim; walk it in a minute. Most waters listed here for Outaouais are larger. Saint-Boniface is the closest town at 82 km. It is 190 km to Gatineau, the nearest city. Others worth noting: Lac Gisors 1.3 km off, Lac Clefy a touch under 1.5 km, Lac Caligny 1.5 km off, Lac Fafiot a touch under 1.6 km and Lac Ambricourt 1.7 km off. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Outaouais records list pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt among the fish reported. These are county-wide records, so not all of them will be in this water. Anyone new to Lac Sonate should walk it once before setting up.
In an average year July sits at 17°C and January at -17°C. Four clear seasons, with a proper winter at one end. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. Averages suggest open water from about early May through to roughly late November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. It holds true on Lac Sonate more years than not.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. There is no mapped parking or launch nearby, which keeps numbers down. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Local rules can differ across the county line, so check where you stand. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. The nearest alternative is Lac Gisors, 1.3 km out. Nothing here settles the position at Lac Sonate for certain.
