A grey, even sky over the water, with a light SSW breeze and steady pressure. Whatever swims in Lac Sim should be near shallow cover and weed edges. Little to get excited about, though the evening holds a sliver of promise. One good spot fished well beats five fished quickly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Set in Outaouais, Lac Sim is a Quebec water. It lies 285 metres above sea level. It runs to roughly 12 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. The edge runs 1.6 km or so, easy to work in an afternoon. Saint-Raphaël lies 38 km from the water. Further out sit Maniwaki (39 km) and Saint-Boniface (40 km). No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Nothing we hold settles how deep this runs. A natural lake fishes on cover, and cover here means weed and timber. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Open biodiversity records for Outaouais list pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. Lac Sim gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
Averages move between -14°C in January and 18°C in July. A full turn of seasons, with the strongest sport on either side of summer. The lid arrives early and lasts until roughly late April. On the long-run averages the water opens up around late April and starts locking again about late November. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. On Lac Sim that shapes the whole year.
Our records carry no access rule either way. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. Should this one be busy, Lac Kenneth is 1.4 km off. For Lac Sim, the notice at the access point is the final word.
