Dull, settled light over the water, with barely a breath of wind with a settled glass. Expect most activity at Lac Sainte-Helene around bays that hold the day's warmth. A slow day overall; the evening is the best of a quiet lot. Lower the pace and stay patient. Falling temperatures are switching fish back on.

Set in Nord-du-Québec, Quebec, this is Lac Sainte-Helene. The country here is boreal forest. The water covers around 1.09 sq km, which puts most of it out of reach from the bank. The full circuit measures close to 4.7 km on foot. You are 50 km from Matagami. It is 419 km to Greater Sudbury, the nearest city. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
There is no recorded depth, so work from what you can see. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Fish documented in Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. On Lac Sainte-Helene the obvious spot is not always the productive one.
Average temperature peaks around 16°C in July and bottoms out near -19°C in January. The window is narrow, and fish feed hard while it lasts. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. Climate figures give an open season running early May to mid November. September and October fish steadily right up to the freeze. It holds true on Lac Sainte-Helene more years than not.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Nothing in the way of made access shows up nearby: no ramp, no car park, no path. Light line and small metal for the trout; a fly rod earns its place on calm evenings. Take the rules with you rather than trusting memory. Where the way in crosses private ground, ask first. Should this one be busy, Lac Miller is 4.8 km off.
