An unsettled, stormy sky today, with a light chop building from the SSW and no real change in pressure. The water to cover at Lac Safran is inflow corners and shaded margins. A stay-home graph, with the middle of the day as the one excuse to go. Downsize everything and pick the calmest water.

Lac Safran sits in Outaouais, out in Quebec. The setting is pine and birch on every side. About 5 hectares of surface, which puts the far bank inside easy sight. Some 95 km away sits Saint-Boniface, the nearest settlement. Gatineau is the closest city, 206 km away. Nearby, in order: Lac Aigny out at 0.9 km, Lac Aiglemont (1 km), Lac du Quartz out at 1.2 km, Lac Talc (1.2 km) and Lac Talegalle out at 1.3 km. The nearest boundary is a fair way off.
Depth is unknown to us, and the shoreline is the better guide. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Across Outaouais, recorded fish include pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass and rainbow smelt. It is the county picture; the agency list is water-specific. At Lac Safran the water rewards a slow, careful approach.
Averages here run 17°C at the top of summer and -17°C at the bottom of winter. A solid cap is the normal state through winter. The open season starts with the thaw, near enough early May. The season between ice runs from about early May to late November. The first weeks of open water and the last are the ones to plan for. Lac Safran fishes to that pattern most years.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Mapping is blank for access, so scout the approach before committing the car. Largemouth respond to soft plastics tight to cover; go weedless where the growth is heavy. Where a permit is needed, the nearest town usually sells it. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. Lac Aigny at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Rules at Lac Safran are worth checking on the day.
