Rain moving through today, with air barely moving with a settled glass. Give inflow corners and shaded margins the first hour at Lac Sableux. Expectations low today; if anything moves, it will be in the night. Lower the pace and stay patient. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

In Quebec, Lac Sableux falls inside Abitibi-Témiscamingue. It sits at 331 metres above sea level. With some 46 hectares of water, there is room for a boat but no need of one. The full circuit measures close to 4.5 km on foot. Nearest town is Mattawa, 52 km off. The big place round here is Greater Sudbury, 207 km distant. There is no boundary nearby to worry about.
Nothing in our records gives a depth for this one. Bays and points beat straight shoreline every time on water like this. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. Across Abitibi-Témiscamingue, recorded fish include northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. The county figures include rivers and lakes alike. Treat Lac Sableux as a water to read rather than to cover.
Averages here run 18°C at the top of summer and -14°C at the bottom of winter. Winter shuts the surface down for months. Firm cover through the cold months, then open water from late April. From about late April to around late November, expect open water on the long-run figures. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. Plan around that when you fish Lac Sableux.
Our records carry no access rule either way. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. Mapping shows no built access close by; expect to walk in from wherever you can leave the car. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Check whether a boat is allowed before you tow one. Close seasons apply to some species and not others. If the gate is shut, Lac Athabascan at 1.4 km is the nearest alternative. Where Lac Sableux is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
