Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with the water lying quiet with a settled glass. Whatever swims in Lac Roger should be near the first drop-off and weed lines. The numbers single out the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Shortening days concentrate the feeding into fewer hours.

Lac Roger falls in Mauricie, part of Quebec. The surroundings are rolling bush. It measures about 17 hectares, which is a comfortable size for bank fishing. Around 2.5 km of margin, front to back. Nearest town is La Tuque, 46 km off. The big place round here is Saguenay, 125 km distant. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
No depth figure has reached our records, which makes a plummet useful. Still water like this holds fish on the edges rather than out in the open. Weed, then depth: that is the order to fish a water of this kind. Records held for Mauricie cover northern pike, brook trout and walleye. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. The shape of Lac Roger decides where the fish sit.
Averages move between -16°C in January and 17°C in July. The middle months are generous; the ends are demanding. Once it clears, about early May, the fishing comes on quickly. On the long-run averages the water opens up around early May and starts locking again about mid November. The weeks after the thaw and the ones before the freeze are the strongest. Lac Roger runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
Ownership and access are not documented in what we hold. Records list it as a natural water body rather than an impoundment. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Where access is informal, keep it that way by behaving. Where parking is tight, arriving early solves most problems. Lac Roy at 0.9 km is the sensible second choice. Check the position at Lac Roger before loading the car.
