Dull, settled light over the water, with air barely moving with the glass holding level. On Lac Riton, work shallow cover and weed edges first. The forecast is against you; the morning is the least bad option. Treat it as a scouting trip with a rod in hand. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Set in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, this is Lac Riton. The bank is 399 metres above sea level. Surface area is around 15 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. Around 2.7 km of margin, front to back. You are 70 km from Senneterre. Gatineau sits 315 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It lies deep inside the county rather than near an edge.
Our records carry no depth, so judge it from the bank. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. Survey and observation records for Abitibi-Témiscamingue include northern pike, yellow perch and walleye. The county list is broader than any single water. At Lac Riton the first feature you find is worth twenty minutes.
The seasonal spread runs -18°C to 16°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. After early May the shallows warm and the fish move up. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. Plan around that when you fish Lac Riton.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. We find no slipway, car park or made path within a short radius, so treat access as rough. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Some stretches are reserved and marked as such on the ground. Lac Steen, 2.8 km away, makes the obvious fallback. Where Lac Riton is concerned, a local answer beats a written one.
