Overcast skies today, with a whisper of wind from the SSW with a settled glass. Whatever swims in Lac Rifle should be near the seam between weed and open water. A hard day on paper; the night edges the rest. Scale down and fish slowly. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Look for Lac Rifle in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec. This is northern bush country. It runs to roughly 16 hectares — big enough to hold fish away from the bank, small enough to learn. Shoreline comes to about 2.2 km, small enough to learn in a day. Senneterre at 118 km is the nearest place to stop. Then Leblanc, 121 km, and Manawan, 132 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
There is no published depth for this one, so start shallow and work out. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. On a natural lake the weed line and the shelf beyond it do the work. Reported across Abitibi-Témiscamingue: northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The near bank of Lac Rifle is often the one people ignore.
Expect July near 16°C and January near -18°C on the long-run figures. This far north the hard season runs and runs. Hard cover is dependable here; it goes around early May. Open water usually runs from early May until about mid November. Right after break-up, and again as the nights sharpen, is when to go. That is the shape of the year on Lac Rifle.
Nothing we hold confirms whether access is permitted. This is a natural basin, not a dammed one. Nothing built is recorded close to the bank here. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Fishing rules and camping rules are set separately here. For a change of water, Lac Dent is 1.8 km distant. For Lac Rifle in particular, ask before you travel.
