Soft grey light all day today, with light air out of the S with the barometer flat. Whatever swims in Lac Rene should be near shallow cover and weed edges. The day peaks in the night. Work fewer spots, but work them properly. Cooler water spreads fish back across the shallows.

Set in Mauricie, Quebec, this is Lac Rene. The surface lies 315 metres up. Surface area is around 39 hectares, which gives you real water without needing a boat. The bank runs about 3.5 km all the way round, so one visit can cover most of it. Size puts it in the front rank of our Mauricie list. For supplies, La Tuque is 46 km out. Saguenay sits 144 km out, and it is the nearest city worth the name. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.
Depth is not on record here, so the bank has to tell you. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. This is a lake, so the margins and the first drop matter most. County-wide records name northern pike, brook trout and walleye. The list covers the county rather than this water alone, so treat it as a guide. The shape of Lac Rene decides where the fish sit.
The year swings from about -16°C in January to roughly 17°C in July. Hard water is a season in its own right here. Count on hard cover from midwinter, and open water from late April. Open water usually runs from late April until about mid November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Keep it in mind when planning a trip to Lac Rene.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. No dam controls it, and the level follows the season. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. A small crankbait along the drop and a worm in the thick stuff cover the bass. Read any posted signs at the access point rather than assuming. Night access is frequently treated as a separate matter. For a change of water, Lac Roland is 3.6 km distant. None of that is settled for Lac Rene in what we hold.
