A closed sky with even light today, with mild air moving in from the SE with a settled glass. The water to cover at Lac Poulin is the first drop-off and weed lines. A tough forecast; the evening offers the only real chance. Save the long walk for a better forecast. Fish follow the bait in autumn, so find one to find the other.

Look for Lac Poulin in the Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean part of Quebec. The bank gives way to spruce and muskeg. At 3 hectares it is the sort of place you fish for an evening rather than a day. It is one of the smaller waters we list in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean. Start from Saint-Fulgence, 18 km down the road. For a city, Saguenay is 31 km off. This one is safely inside the county line.
Depth figures are not published for this one. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Fish documented in Saguenay/Lac-Saint-Jean include northern pike, Atlantic salmon, lake whitefish and fallfish. Some of the species recorded here are protected or tightly regulated, so check what may be targeted before you fish. Lac Poulin gives up more to patience than to distance.
Averages move between -17°C in January and 16°C in July. Cold dominates the year and the fishing works around it. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. Break-up near early May, freeze-up near mid November: that is the shape of an average year. From the thaw to midsummer the fishing improves week by week. Lac Poulin fishes to that pattern most years.
There is no clear statement anywhere on who can fish it. Formal access is not mapped, so the last stretch is likely on foot. Pike mean a wire trace, no exceptions; big spoons and jerkbaits do the searching. Season dates differ by species, so read the table. Keep proof of licence with you rather than in the car. Lac Duquet at 2.6 km is the sensible second choice. For Lac Poulin, the notice at the access point is the final word.
