Lac Portugais, Quebec: Fishing Spots and Seasons

• Overview

  The Nord-du-Québec end of Quebec holds Lac Portugais. What surrounds it is spruce and muskeg. This is big water, about 12.11 sq km, and in a wind it behaves like a small sea. Around 35 km of margin, so directions matter more than a general plan. On our Nord-du-Québec list it sits near the top for size. For a base, Inukjuak sits 189 km out. Beyond it, Sanikiluaq at 266 km and Puvirnituq at 292 km. It sits well inside its county, with no border complications.

• Where to Fish on Lac Portugais

  Depth remains unrecorded, so treat the first session as a survey. Look for the band where the shallows give up and the bottom falls away. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. Fish documented in Nord-du-Québec include Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout and lake whitefish.   The warmest month averages 12°C, the coldest about -23°C. Open water is the exception rather than the rule here. Ice fishing carries the winter, and the water opens about early June. Ice usually gives way near early June, and forms again about early November. Fishing peaks soon after break-up and again before the cold returns. Lac Portugais runs to that rhythm year in and year out.
