Fresh rain topping the water up today, with a light S breeze and the barometer holding steady. The productive water at Lac Popian will be around the seam between weed and open water. If you pick one session, make it the night. Change depth before you change anything else. Autumn fish are feeding up and less fussy than in summer.

Lac Popian is a Nord-du-Québec water, Quebec side. It lies 415 metres above sea level. This is a pocket water of some 5 hectares, and every part of it is reachable from the bank. It is a small entry by Nord-du-Québec standards. 50 km away sits Chibougamau, the nearest town. For a city, Saguenay is 242 km off. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
Depth here is unknown, so count the lead down before committing. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Where the bottom changes texture, fish gather; find that line. County-wide records name Arctic charr, brook trout, lake trout, lake whitefish and cisco. The county list is broader than any single water. Lac Popian gives up its fish to patience rather than distance.
July is the warm end of the year here, averaging about 16°C, while January sits near -19°C. This is a two-season water: locked, then wide open. Break-up comes around early May, and the run that follows is short and strong. The lid tends to go about early May and return around mid November. The middle of summer slows a little, with dawn and dusk carrying it. That shapes the year on Lac Popian.
We hold no note on access for this one. No slipway, car park or made path shows up nearby in mapping, so treat access as rough. Trout here take small spinners, spoons and, where fly water allows, a nymph or dry. Parking is often the real limit rather than the bank itself. Where tickets apply, they are sold in the nearest town rather than on the bank. If the gate is shut, Lac Ciel at 0.7 km is the nearest alternative. For Lac Popian, the notice at the access point is the final word.
