Cloud from horizon to horizon today, with a light SSW breeze and pressure sitting still. Start the search at Lac Papillon along the first drop-off and weed lines. Little to get excited about, though the night holds a sliver of promise. Lower the pace and stay patient. The season of moving fish: stay mobile and watch for bait.

Lac Papillon is one of the Outaouais waters in Quebec. Land around it is mixed forest. At roughly 2 hectares, the whole thing is within casting reach of a single walk. On size it sits at the modest end of our Outaouais list. For supplies, Deep River is 52 km out. Chalk River is 58 km and Petawawa 67 km. No boundary runs near, so the local rules hold throughout.
We hold no survey for this water; read the slope of the shoreline instead. A soft bed grows weed late into autumn, which keeps fish shallow. The productive water is a rod length or two out, not a hundred. Outaouais records list pumpkinseed, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, rainbow smelt and Iowa darter among the fish reported. Records at county level tell you what is around, not what is stocked here. Lac Papillon responds to conditions more than to tactics.
The year swings from about -14°C in January to roughly 18°C in July. The year runs cold to warm and back, with clear transitions. Winter locks it down, and late April brings it back. Ice clears near late April and comes back about late November in a typical year. Fish feed hardest at the start and the close of the open season. Time your trip to Lac Papillon by conditions rather than dates.
We have no record of the rules that apply on this bank. Public data shows nothing built here, so treat the whole approach as informal. Bass water: a Texas-rigged worm near cover, a spinnerbait when you need to cover ground. Where the road in crosses private land, ask first. Barbless rules turn up on managed water more often than not. For a change of water, Lac des Trois Freres is 0.8 km distant. Confirm access to Lac Papillon locally before you travel.
