Low, flat cloud sitting over the water, with barely a breath of wind and pressure going nowhere. Expect most activity at Lac Palustre around bays that hold the day's warmth. Numbers are low everywhere; the middle of the day is the pick of them. Take the small wins and call it early if it dies.

Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Quebec, is where Lac Palustre sits. The surroundings are lake country bush. It covers about 5 hectares, so this is small water you can walk round in under an hour. Our Abitibi-Témiscamingue list holds plenty of bigger water. Start from Saint-Boniface, 110 km down the road. The nearest city of size is Gatineau, 216 km away. The nearest boundary is well away, so one set of rules covers the water.
Without a survey to go on, judge depth from how the bank falls away. The shallow end warms first and pulls fish in ahead of the rest. Read the surface for the wind lane, then fish the edge of it. County-wide records name northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, white sucker and brown bullhead. Those are county-wide records, so not every one of them will be in this water. The shape of Lac Palustre decides where the fish sit.
Averages move between -16°C in January and 17°C in July. Winter puts a hard lid on this one. Count the season from break-up, usually early May. In an average year the thaw lands around early May and the freeze near late November. Look to early summer and the first cool weeks of autumn. That is the shape of the year on Lac Palustre.
Whether the bank is open is not something our records settle. Nothing formal is recorded here: no ramp, no car park, no marked path. For the pike, wire up and throw larger lures along the weed edges. Gates get locked out of season on water like this. A polite question at the farm gate opens more banks than anything else. Lac Tignac sits 0.5 km off and takes the overflow. None of that is settled for Lac Palustre in what we hold.
